About

The Empty Bowls Project is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight against hunger.  The project was initiated by a Michigan art teacher during the 1990-91 school year as a way to raise charitable funds for his community.  His idea has expanded across the US and to at least a dozen other countries.  The basic idea of Empty Bowls is simple.  Potters and others donate handcrafted bowls. Guests purchase tickets to a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert. Each guest selects a handcrafted bowl to keep as a reminder of the empty bowls this event will help to fill. One hundred percent of each meal’s proceeds will be donated to local hunger-fighting organizations.

Our Mission

The Empty Bowls Virginia Peninsula committee is a fraternal organization of volunteers engaged in a grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight against hunger within our local communities.

Hunger in the US and the Peninsula

“In the United States, more than one out of six children lives in a household with food insecurity, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.2 million children under 18 in the United States live in this condition – unable to consistently access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy life.” Source: Feeding America

In the cities and counties served by the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, 71,840 people are suffering with food insecurity. Click here: http://hrfoodbank.org/Learn/local-hunger.html to find out more about hunger in your community.
